Evangelical Christians tend to believe it. It is considered a heresy in mainline Protestantism, Catholic, and Orthodox belief.

I consider it to be a ridiculous misreading of Scripture, dovetailed with the other misreading of Scripture that our bodies are evil and our spirits are good (when in fact, our bodies and spirits are tied together as one and that's what makes us whole - ie, Genesis 2).

This is a good summary. Also, I think it's mainly a US thing. People in the equivalent of the evangelical movement over here is not that into it as far as I know.

It's prideful to say that you will be saved and basically suggest the people behind you won't. Why else would you need to warn them?

No doubt, however I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt that they aren't boasting. I don't have any bumper stickers like that btw. I do have a good friend who painted Jesus is Lord on the back of his truck though. I'm sure not everyone cared for it.
