  • I've heard that up to 20 million American adults have no picture ID. That's somewhere around 10% of the potential electorate. I'm willing to bet that that portion of the population is also less likely to get information about the new laws and to have access to obtaining the required ID. There used to be an organisation devoted to helping them with this sort of stuff, but it got framed by a right-wing ideologue and is no longer around to help them.

I'm willing to bet that if picture ID's were required, those that think they would benefit by having those without proper IDs vote would make an all out effort to assist said people to get IDs.
There are other organizations that assist in getting people to vote.

              • The example Ken gave certainly was unreasonable but I suspect not at all typical. It would be akin to using a 12 year old that was gang raped for an example of a typical abortion scenario.

I've yet to hear why voter IDs would be so onerous 10's of millions would be disenfranchised.

If I fail to take reasonable steps to ensure I can vote I am no more being disenfranchised than if I fail to show up at the polls because it is too much of a hassle.

If there was a big bi-partisan national campaign to get a free photo ID into the hands of everyone that could be used to confirm voter identity, then that would be fine. At the moment however all these laws are specifically designed to stop large segments of society from voting. The worst offenders are the same states that used many of the same tricks just decades ago to stop blacks voting. The same states who at the same time are making it harder for people to help minorities and the poor to register to vote, and keep trying to stop students from voting because they lean Dem.

Sorry man, in principle it might not be a bad thing, but in terms of actual US voter ID bills its the same old crap they've been trying to get away with for time immemorial.

                    • 1 in 10 American's don't have government issued photo ID. Many Americans live in remote locations, work multiple jobs, and for various other reasons cannot just easily get to a DMV or city hall to get the relevant documents. Many Americans do not have birth certificates and were born prior to the modern systems we have today for getting new ones. The reasons why getting a 'free' photo ID can be neither free not easy for real people is nearly endless.

                      • Now how about you explain why Americans should need photo ID to vote when there is next to no voter fraud that would be prevented by it.

This issue was litigated all the way to the Supreme Court in '08 and it the ruling went against you. There's been nothing to change that relevant facts of the issue.

The same supreme court that declared that corporations were people. Excuse me if I don't trust them to relate to the problems of the ordinary folk.

You should post more than just a link. That's a Republican firing Democratic members of the election board for the crime of wanting to open the polls at weekends, like they did 4 years ago with no problems.

It still amazes me that people try and defend this bull****.
