Your revolutionaries tried to protect you against the power and corruption that huge corporations bring because they'd seen exactly what effect they had on British democracy. Who's tea was it you think got thrown in Boston harbour?
A few fun quotes to pass the time..
Originally posted by President Lincoln - 1864“We may congratulate ourselves that this cruel war is nearing its end. It has cost a vast amount of treasure and blood … It has indeed been a trying hour for the Republic; but I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless.”Originally posted by President Cleveland - 1888“As we view the achievements of aggregated capital, we discover the existence of trusts, combinations, and monopolies, while the citizen is struggling far in the rear, or is trampled beneath an iron heel. Corporations, which should be the carefully restrained creatures of the law and the servants of the people, are fast becoming the people’s masters.”
Originally posted by President Roosevelt“We wish to control big business so as to secure among other things good wages for the wage-workers and reasonable prices for the consumers. Wherever in any business the prosperity of the businessman is obtained by lowering the wages of his workmen and charging an excessive price to the consumers we wish to interfere and stop such practices. We will not submit to that kind of prosperity any more than we will submit to prosperity obtained by swindling investors or getting unfair advantages over business rivals.”

I believe it is unfair and kind of ridiculous to compare what Jon Husted is doing (and many of the obvious partisan tricks that some politicians are doing) with those of us that don't see requiring a photo Id as being too onerous. There are a many reasonable people (not all ) here that have no issue with requiring a photo ID. (and most have no issue with making sure that they're easily available and free) Most of us would agree that Husted is a douche along with quite a few Repugs trying to game the system. But just because they're taking more obvious and extreme measures does not necessarily mean our opinions on photo ids should be seen the same. Intent is important. Those trying to dismiss any argument we have by bringing up douches like Husted aren't being honest. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. I'm not voting for Romney in November, but this is the full context of that quote:
Originally posted by New York Times“We have to make sure that the promises we make in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are promises we can keep, and there are various ways of doing that,” Mr. Romney said. “One is, we can raise taxes on people.”
“Corporations!” the protesters shouted, suggesting that Mr. Romney, as president, should raise taxes on large businesses.
“Corporations are people, my friend,” Mr. Romney responded, as the hecklers shouted back, “No, they’re not!”
“Of course they are,” Mr. Romney said, chuckling slightly. “Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people. Where do you think it goes?”Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

But there are many of us that grew up with fraud. While I'll agree that it isn't as bad as it used to be, to think that it's been eliminated is naive imo. Just because there isn't overwhelming proof that it's rampant doesn't mean it's not happening. Growing up in Chicago does taint my opinion. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

But think about this for a moment. He says one of the things you can do to raise revenue is raise taxes on people. A protester suggests he could raise taxes on corporations instead. And Romney's response is essentially that raising taxes on corporations is raising taxes on people, because corporations are made up of people. I will grant that he didn't articulate this particularly clearly, but if you watch the clip of this, you can tell that he's pretty flustered by the protester. And when we're flustered, we tend not to say things as clearly as we intend.
Or if he was, half the journalists in America have just spent the last year wasting literally millions of words misunderstanding him.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.
