In general, safety nets keep people from striving up, because they don't have to - if you HAVE to work to get food, you will. More importantly, though, safety nets from the government are a lot easier to rely on for a long time than more localized safety nets. If you were starving, temporarily, and couldn't get welfare, your family would probably feed you - but you'd feel really bad about it, right? You'd want to get back to work so you could make up for what they gave you, and pay it forward or whatever. Often not the case for the government, where there's not someone you personally know who a) makes you feel guilty and b) actually suffers for your need.

it's true to say that societies without a welfare state, or with insufficient welfare states, are more 'dynamic' in the sense that people have to do something to survive and so they do. so here in brasil, you can see people selling things on the beaches, the streets, the buses and trains. you see people collecting cans and cardboard for recycling. people performing juggling and other circus stuff at traffic lights and so on.

however, there's another side to this which is that these societies also have much higher levels of poverty. you see those who cannot do something, the old, the infirm, the disabled and the sick, reduced to begging on the streets. you see higher crime rates, as people become desperate, or simply decide that an honest living is too hard to make.

it depends on what sort of society you want. personally i think it's better to provide everyone with a decent standard of living (of course you will still get some who slip through the net, due to mental illness or addiction issues etc.) and accept the fact that it means that some will use the welfare system to do nothing when they could do something.

The US was a war and the economy was basically planned. It's a different thing to think that the free market is going to work like that. Ashers question was "can the US import the same amount of oil without importing from Canada?" Correct? No they can't simply by using your suggestion. Your suggestion would raise the price of oil.

What's absurd, Asher, is that under your hypothetical, which as I recall is "Alberta stops selling oil to the US and sells to China", there would be the exact same logistical problems on Alberta as there are to the US. Yet you claim that Alberta would not be affected if they did this.
