The Canadian long gun registry was a ridiculously expensive and totally worthless boondoggle. No way do I want that repeated here.

Christ, it's like listening to one of Harper's commercials.

          Are you a real person?

Keep the regular stock on, if you want to hit reliably. A shotgun it the best home defense weapon. Choose the pellet size to be reasonably lethal at the longest indoor line of sight you have, and the wall will adequately suck up whatever get past the target. I equip mine with #2s. Buckshot would be overkill and go farther than intended.

Man, know how I know that you've never around guns, at all?

It's a pump-action shotgun that originated as a hunting shotgun. This nessecitates a longer barrel. A straight up "home defense" shotgun, like the Pardner Protector, is substantially smaller and can't carry as many shells.

I bet Slowwie was mighty pleased with himself when his first pubes came through - till he realised he couldn't find his penis any more!

I just think it's sad that where you live is so dangerous that you feel you have to own a shotgun.
Some people just like to shoot guns, not "because they live in a dangerous place".

Although, if you DO want a home defense weapon, a shotgun is better because the round isn't going to go sailing throught he drywall and hit your neighbors.

After all - it's not like you can take it down to the firing range...
              Why not?

The State of Virginia has a clay pigeon/skeet range not 5 miles form my house for public recreation. I find it unlikely that Texas wouldn't have similar facilities, either public or privately owned.

EDIT: I'd add that more people own bigger parcels of land in the US then in, say, the UK. I have several coworkers who live out in the sticks and have sufficient acreage that they can just fire their guns on a makeshift range.

I'm not trying to misquote, or even selectively quote you, but this actually inspired another question - Wasn't the 2nd ammendment ("A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.") was meant to allow/facilitate states/governments to form militias? Wouldn't this almost necessitate the State to keep track of who owns what weapons so militias can be formed, if and when required? Reading it that way would almost make and anti-registration type seem, well, un-American, eh? (Just reminding you I'm a Canadian - btw- I'm really enjoying the level of discussion and I'm getting a better understanding of an American quirk that always irked me.)

The state would issue you a weapon if it called you up for militia service.

Not just would; it actually does. National Guardsmen do not have to bring their own rifles.

Militia act 1792 mandated gun ownership in the inevitable call up of militia to repel foreign, read european invaders. Type and quantity of ammo also specified. Somehow mandating ownership of m16's tho and stocks of ammo isn't what you were after tho were I to guess.

In the era of (or leading up to) the formation of this country, militias were often (mostly?) using their own personal firearms. That situation is more telling about the context the 2nd Amendment than our modern National Guard arrangement is.

....The USG actually mandated that voting citizens own their own longarms and a set amount of powder. It was a government mandate that was actually referred to in the recent healthcare ruling.

The justification for that was not the commerce or taxing power, however.

That is how it is now, but was that the way it was 200+ years ago? "Canadians are about to overrun us! Who has a gun?"
