  • American Gun Owners

Sloww didn't think this belonged in another thread, Fletch partially responded, but, Rather than discussing if guns are good, great or not so great, maybe Poly can reconcile freedom for true Americans & freedom for the other true Americans.

Do you insure your guns? As part of the insurance do you record your serial #s? If your guns were to be stolden, would you report the type of gun, its serial # to your insurer and the police (a government agency)? If the police had access to a data base with your information, as well as the info on the guns you owned, does this destroy your right to privacy?

You do not have a constitutional right to own a car (correct me if I'm wrong). Your car is registered and licenced, and the police can access a data base with your information through that licence plate, correct? Cars won't go away, and outside of a few extremists on both sides of the Canada/US border, there doen't seem to be an outcry about big government intruding on our 'privacy' to own a car. Why is that? If cars can be licenced and tracked, why not guns?
    1) So American gun owners, do you insure your guns as part of your tenants'/homeowners' insurance? )As a Canadian, when I buy/bought tenants'/homeowners' insurance, there are/were questions about what firearms I own, there value and what sort of storage I have for guns and ammo.)

    2) Do you insure guns seperately?

    3) Do some of you not have any 'property' insurance?

    4) If your gun/guns are stolden, would you report it to the police?

**) Finally - bonus question only for those that answer the above questions, if cars can be licenced and tracked through insurance and licencing, why not guns?

    1) I suppose it's part of the blanket policy, but I've never itemized them.
    2) No.
    3) How should I know?
    4) Absolutely.

**) Can they? Sure. Should they? Well.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I insure them seperately form my renters insurance, just like my Cameras.

      3) Do some of you not have any 'property' insurance?
I have rental insurance, plus specific insurance for some items in case they get jacked/destroyed if I'm away from my apartment wiht them.
      4) If your gun/guns are stolden, would you report it to the police?
Yes, because I don't want someone to get killed and be harrassed about it by the cops.

Honestly? There is no practical reason why not. The answer that is given, is that "owning a car" is not a Constitutionally protected right, but owning firearms is. The concern is that widespread firearms registration will lead to confiscation, thus depriving the owners of Constitutionally guarenteed property. Incidents in New Orleans and NYC(even if the scope was exagerated) is what causes gun ownership advocates to scream against registration and equate it as stepp 1 in a plan for removing them from private ownership.

In Texas and many other state, in a standard homeowners policy, firearms would have a subject to low capped maximum loss value (along with furs jewelry and few other items), unless itemized under a endorement form and an additional premium paid (the time and effort of itemizing is far more sigmificant than the premium for the rider). I do not knoew how they are handled on renters policies.

                1) No

                2) No

                3) No

                4) Yes (since I don't want to be accountable for crimes committed with them)

Bonus) I'd rather remove all regulation and tracking on cars than extend them to guns.

That's the whole point - my gun is already plenty big enough!

I have my guns shoved away in a closet. I store them with the actions locked open, but otherwise they are not locked up at all. I don't have insurance on them. I don't remember what the serial numbers on them are, or have them written down anywhere, so I probably would not be able to report them stolen if they were stolen.

The concern with registering guns that I have is that it makes it a pain in the ass to bring them across state lines, because states generally don't have registration reciprocity.

The only insurance a gun owner needs is more guns to protect their other guns with.

None of my guns would be great for defensive purposes. Maybe the shotgun. I just haven't bought a safe, and don't have insurance for any of my stuff.
