If an asteroid were projected to wipe out most of Earth, and you are president and have to pick who gets a ticket to the national bomb shelter, you'd have to exclude and condemn homosexuals, the elderly the sick and the obese.

So, did anyone else notice that women are into really short shorts this summer? I mean women wear shorts every summer, but this year I've seen a lot of late '70s style cut off type shorts that barely have enough material to cover the crotch. I approve this message. There's nothing wrong with the dream, my friend, the problem lies with the dreamer.

That would be redundant seeing as Ed Beach the elderly uncreative homosexual child molester ticks almost all those boxes except obesity.

What if on the way to finding cure, they find a gay pill first - ie you take it and you become gay??? Will they take over the world instead, and only designer babies? Seems to have potential to resolve overpopulation problems, global warming and next great extinction of wildlife. Once you get the human population numbers down to 100000 you can exploit the world as much as you want without repercussions, and if you can get to that number without WWIII, all the better. Clearly it's the only solution without causing much pain and sufferingSocrates: "Good is That at which all things aim, If one knows what the good is, one will always do what is good." We don't know of any especially effective way to make straight people stop being homophobic. In the OP's hypothetical we do know a way to make gay people stop being gay (or more precisely, to prevent them from being being gay in the first place). So, yes, in that case it would be the solution.

It's also not clear that homophobia is the only reason that gay people would be less happy. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the process of discovering that you're gay is inherently somewhat confusing and stressful for many people. Finally, it's obviously going to be slightly easier for straight people to find partners because of network effects.

I mean, seriously guys think about this. We have roughly three possibilities:
In expectation a child will live a happier life if he is born gay. (This seems unlikely.)
In expectation a child will live precisely as happy a life if he is born gay as if he is born straight. (This seems very unlikely. It would be very strange if the two were exactly equal.)
In expectation a child will live a happier life if he is born straight. (This seems to match our observations to date.)
Now, it's theoretically possible that there is some social good to diversity of sexual orientation, but I don't see any evidence of one and no one else has put forward this theory. Thus we should conclude that if we were given a button that would turn all children born henceforth straight, we ought to press the button.
