Not all technology or scientific discovery is predicted in advance. Things like the space program led to some crazy new **** that we'd never have even known about without that program. Your entire (poorly thought out) argument would slow human progress to a crawl.

The world gets to decide how much money is spent on you getting blowjobs (for example).

You might think that a blowjob from NoVa is worth 100$ and a blowjob from germantown is only worth 50$, but only you are really going to be able to give a value for you getting blowjobs... only you are a buyer on the market.

We do spend a lot more on applied technologies than on basic science because of this. And funding on basic science is heavily determined based on how much it helps applications/public education.

The Space Race was an overt political endeavour. No way in heck it can be considered an efficient use of funds if the objective was scientific progress.
