These decongestants contained Ephedra, not Oxymetalazone, and they were pressurized aerosols. Evidently when opened it was easy to mostly separate the propellant from the drug. Ephedra is the original stimulant, dating back some 3500 years to the ancient Aryans who invaded India around 1200 BC. In their writings, which became the basis for the Riga Vedas, they praise a drug called Soma, not related to the newer muscle relaxant. They even had a god devoted to the drug. Ephedra is a stimulant related to epinephrine and norepinephrine and has actions that are a composite of both.
