That right there is why you will never be able to have an intelligent discussion about unions.

Because unions make sure that workers who are injured get compensation?

I know lots of people who aren't unionized and that hasn't happened to any of them.

Losing arms in work accidents is a real big problem for teachers and government bureaucrats, you know!

You mean the government does. Workman's comp.

You won't lecture me on unions until you have had the pleasure of working in management for a union employer. It's not 1875.

You are escaping the point you originally made:

Guess what? The entire purpose of unions is to make sure comparable jobs aren't available, so they can sustain higher wages for the people in the union.

Where exactly do you think those protections actually came from? Many things that are now standard practise for everyone, often started out as concessions forced by unions for workers.

I'm seriously amazed I'm having a debate where I'm basically having to defend unions considering the last real union debate I had led to me being described as a 'heartless Tory *****' over my support for Mrs Thatchers unionbreaking.

                      Ditto.

I have advocated adjustments to the power held by unions - but jackasses all across the world want to do away completely with collective bargaining, which is just way over the board.

His friends are probably college educated people who work in an office. Surprise surprise, they don't have much need for unions.

Since alby's never held an office job in his life, maybe you should defer to his judgment.

Of course, this whole thing with Kuci is just a heads I win, tails you lose scenario since if he gave anecdotal evidence, you would accuse him of using anecdotal evidence, while if he gives non-anecdotal evidence, you accuse him of being out of touch and lacking anecdotal evidence.

Why should State workers be forced to join a Union and have dues taken from their paycheck as a condition of employment? If the Union is so great let the employee join it of his own volition.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

I'm only accusing him of making a ridiculous statement that is obviously ridiculous. :

Which means we don't need the unions anymore, no?
