Why waste time on a VMAX? Rather than buy a Harley clone just buy the real deal. Either way though I'm not sure the cruiser experience is what he's looking for though I concede they're much more comfortable for a long trip; that said he said his daily commute would be less than 10 minutes.

My short list would be the 600-700cc sporty bikes of the major makers. The Honda CBR 600RR (or 650RR), the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, the Suzuki GSX-R600, the Triumph Daytona 675, and the Yamaha YZF-R6. Go to dealers, ride each one, then go home and think about each one and weight the differences.

The margin of safety on motorcycles is slim. If you aren't killed, you could get hurt pretty easily (know instances personally of both). Good luck!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It comes down to how cool you want to look when arriving at work. While a motorcycle will significantly reduce the douche factor that a sports car has, you'll be in suburbia where everyone's a douche anyway. Get a convertible.

Like I said, I have very limited experience with bikes on a personal basis. When I was 18 I did witness someone riding a bike who got killed not because he did anything wrong but because some selfish dumb**** decided to run a red coming off of a freeway. That did make an impression on me. I also remember that just before that I wanted to buy a bike, my father over ruled me, and what he told me has stuck with me. It's exactly what I said in this thread, "you can be the best rider in the world but it wouldn't matter if some other dumb**** does something stupid."

Of course, none of this changes the fact that I was pissed off to all hell that after forbidding me from buying a motorcycle WITH MY OWN MONEY when I was 18 I later found out my father owned a bike in 1966 when he was 18. I didn't know about that until Thanksgiving of my 18th year though when the subject came up and my Grandmother mentioned it to me. I was especially mad because my parents were dating in 1966 so my mom and dad both knew about my dad owning a motorcycle but they never mentioned that before they both forbade me to buy one.

So you take it better when advice is given by someone without a clue?

                  Spaced, that looks pretty interesting.

It is absolutely in no way a "Harley clone". The wiki article is wrong in calling it a cruiser- it's a classic muscle bike, and the best muscle bike ever made.

In any straight line sprint, it would leave a Harley standing.

Yep. My average commute speed is 15mph.

And I missed where you said you would cycle too.

My brother's best friend was an expert rider who took every precaution. It didn't stop him from being killed whe he hit an oil patch in the Lincoln Tunnel.

A friend of mine from college wrecked her leg when a car ran a stop sign; she tried to lay the bike down, but there wasn't enough room to stop and her leg caught on the bike. She went over the hood. The bike didn't.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                              5 miles, and your ability?

Get a gym near work and run.

Saves you time on your workouts too, so you have more time for enjoying life outside of work + commute.
