Looking to up the bike. Triumph Thruxton seems nice, any other suggestions in similar style?

OK, it's way to late to chime in given that you already bought a Thruxton (which really is the best of the modernized Cafe Racers) but the four bikes which tend to lead the category (and they're all Brit Bikes) are the Hyde Harrier, the Norton Commando, and Royal Enfield Clubman, and, of course, the Triumph Thruxton. The Hyde Harrier looks like exactly what it is; namely, a kit bike originally designed in the 1970's and which hasn't been updated since so I'd avoid it. The Enfield Clubman is a relaunch of a really old motorcycle brand name but it's all rather dodgy as the tiny single cylinder engine is made in India while the frame is borrowed from a new Triumph which they just tacked a bunch of after market parts on to. The new Norton is also a relaunch of an old English motorcycle brand (they relaunched it in 2006) this time by an American company which cut its teeth modify the old English bikes and at first all the new Nortons were made in Oregon but now they've set up a proper factory in England so now all new Nortons are made in the UK. All the parts are brand new designs and state of the art but none of it has been truly quality tested yet.

Yeah, the Thruxton is probably the best bet and the most well sorted of those four especially since the Norton supposedly still has some issues to work out but the Norton is designed to be a full line volume producer much like Triumph or the Japanese makers so when the Triumph gets old and you're looking for something new to excite you should give a Norton a ride.

Norton is currently only making ~1000 bikes per year. To compare Triumph makes ~50,000 per year while the big makers like Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki all build millions per year. Globally ~100 million motorcycles are built each year and the world's largest maker is some company based in India you've probably never heard of.

Will be moving to the suburbs soon, so we need some machines

Wife will still be commuting about 30 miles each way. Thinking a porsche cayman for her. I'll be within 5 miles. Want to learn to ride. Short distances, so something cheap and japanese? for me. Any suggestions on either? On the bike I could also go for something restored if there's a reasonably priced classic model that would be suitable.
