We will be dealing with the consequences of this vicious, inhuman crime.

He should have been handed over to Afghan authorities. He was technically AWOL when he did this so the government should consider him as effectively not being an American soldier at the time of the massacre.

Anything less than the death penalty for this soldier will be the icing on the cake of this latest PR disaster for the US - they've already compounded things by spiriting him out of the country.
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

I saw the thread title, saw that MOBIUS was the last person who posted in it, and correctly predicted the general thrust of his post. Do I win points?

The death penalty wouldn't be appropriate?

Nah, he should totally be executed, but my point is that MOBIUS is reliably anti-American. It's like the sun coming up in the morning.

Even if he was AWOL, he's still in service. You don't just give him to a foreign country.
The Taliban breaking off talks in indignation? Screw them. Let's break out the Daniel Pearl video for a refresher reminder.
We could read about the aid workers that were slaughtered. What it amounts to is that these ass holes are going to use anything to advance their cause.
That's a fact, even if this soldier did do a terrible thing due to emotional stress.

I have always thought that turning over one of our own was an absolute no no, but this incident has made me question that.

It's a horrible crime, but until we get all the facts especially about his mental state etc. we shouldn't jump to conclusions on guilt let alone punishment.

This is the kind of case that would make sense for the international criminal court to hear, if the US had signed up for that. Independent, but also a high legal standard.

The US spoke a good line about international justice at Nuremburg but have spent the intervening 60 years backing away from it.

Already convicted him without a trial?

Do you think he would get a fair trial in Afghanistan?

Do you believe that the U.S. Military, with the world looking down their back, would not conduct a fair trial?

Why has this instance almost changed your thinking?

I don't think a fair trial is possible in Afghanistan.

I think he definitely wouldn't get a fair trial in Afghanistan.

And US military trials aren't very 'fair' by my definition either. I think the pressure on them for a guilty verdict might make it unfair against him.

Whether the US can conduct a fair trial or not in this case is irrelevant. Afghans won't accept it.
