That's fine and I happen to agree with you (a defendant deserves a fair trial) but if that means he MUST be tried by a US court then let's not pretend it won't have any effect on the ground situation. You do still have troops there don't you?

The situation on the ground is exactly as hopeless as it was before the attack. It's just now more obviously hopeless.

Are you a Romney supporter? From what I see he wants to let the generals decide the policy (i.e. expect to be there a whole lot longer).

Santorum can't seem to decide what his policy would be...

I imagine Romney probably wouldn't rock the boat too much on Afghanistan. It's not a vote-winner, just a vote-loser. I suspect if elected he'd probably follow Obama's blueprints, maybe not to the letter, but in spirit.

Or he could decide to just hang there for a while. I still vastly prefer him to Obama.

So you think the mission has been a lost cause since before this event but it really doesn't matter all that much?

So in America you can slaughter 24 unarmed civilians including 7 children and be charged only with dereliction of duty?

We could read about the aid workers that were slaughtered. What it amounts to is that these ass holes are going to use anything to advance their cause.
That's a fact, even if this soldier did do a terrible thing due to emotional stress.
You don't think that if a NATO soldier deployed on our soil did something like this to some American families we wouldn't insist that he be tried in an American court? Remember, if he gets tried back in Italy or France he might only get 15 years.

If things were the other way around the US would be gassing up the bombers by now.

There is still the issue of the SOFA though. Yeah, it's an unequal treaty, more than a little neo-colonial in nature, but it's still a legally binding treaty.

International tribunals are disgusting because they are pretty much entirely ex post facto. The concept of "crime against humanity" is so vaguely defined that I don't think charging people with it is consistent with our constitution. Moreover, there is no way in hell I would be willing to let my country give up any of its sovereignty for the sake of "international governance." The UN is a joke of a body made up primarily of crappy dictatorships. It has its uses, but governance of any kind does not belong with it.
