    No, that's not clear.

      • If you guys want to eat reconstituted puppy brains with an arsenic dressing then go right ahead, you're adults and if you want to fill your bodies with foul crap then no-one should stop you. When if comes to feeding this revolting pink gung to kids in school however in lieu of proper nutritional food, then thats not ok. As Oliver pointed out, the stuff being fed to children is creating a generation of kids who are obese, unhealthy and may well live less long than their parents. For what exactly? So they can save 5 cents?

Given the way biology works, this is largely untrue. Whether man-made or natural, most of the chemicals we put into our body operate on the same principle: by binding or not binding to various receptors. Artificial chemicals are not doing radically new things to our bodies; they're just making things that already happen in our bodies happen more or less frequently. And that's what everything we put into our bodies does.

If reconstituted puppy brains with arsenic dressing can be made just as safe as all natural puppy brain food but can be done cheaper or tastier or better by some other criteria, what does it matter?

            • The human body is much more complex than we know.

              What we know is that:

People with traditional diets and lifestyles are significantly healthier than industrial urban dwellers, given similar access to modern medicine.
What industrial urban dwellers eat is naturally repulsive given sufficient information.

              Case ****ing closed.

If you want to base your opinions on health on whatever makes you feel squeamish you're welcome to do that, and if you have kids you're welcome to pack lunches for them based on your prejudice. However you haven't provided any compelling evidence that using every edible part of an animal and treating it with preservatives is dangerous or will make kids fat.

Yeah, since modern humans have ample opportunity to eat too much and live a sedentary lifestyle, it's clear that CHEMICALS are to be avoided whenever possible. Case closed!

Correlation != causation. We don't actually have a firm grasp on why certain people are healthier than others, but there are a lot of confounding factors such as genetics, environment, and psychology.

Surgery is pretty repulsive. We should stop doing it.

No, I'm not a nutritionist and am not in any way qualified to provide compelling evidence. Jamie Oliver however went to the trouble of finding out and taking that argument to school who were consistantly delivering unhealthy salt ladened food to children laced with preservatives that left them with lowered attention spans, led to obesity and delivered a range of other health problems. Funnily enough feeding young children fries, burgers and chicken nuggets made of pink gunk does not lead to healthy children.

Yes, everyone knows how dangerous chemicals are. I won't eat anything with chemicals in them. I refuse anything even remotely related to chemistry!

For many kids their school lunches are the most healthy thing they eat all day. Kids aren't obese from eating mechanically separated meats, or food that's been treated with ammonia to kill bacteria. Kids are obese because they drink soda instead of water, eat junk food at every meal, and never do anything more physical than turning on their X-boxes.

In the Middle Ages and later, peasants use dto fantasize about fat and cream- it's one of the abiding features of stories about the land of Cockaigne. I do like creamy soups such as lobster and crab bisque, but I'm not keen on mayonnaise at all.

The BBC recently had an article about offal sales skyrocketing in the UK because celebrity chefs have made it cool again to eat even the strange parts plus those strange parts tend to be much cheaper so with the recession people want to save money while trying a new experience.

It was never 'cool' for us, but always a necessity- being working class. My grandmother used to cook tripe and cows' heels and when I was living in Melbourne and made the acquaintance of our local milk bar owner (who was from Beijing) it turned out we used to perform the same service for our grandmothers- burning the bristles off pigs' heads and cleaning the tails of pigs too.

I used to enjoy coming back from Ireland after visiting relatives because we'd always be laden down with free black pudding, white pudding, sweetbreads and so on- as my uncles and great uncles worked in one of Dublin's slaughterhouses. Of course in those days anyone flying back from Ireland was routinely thoroughly searched, so it was always amusing to see the look on the faces of Customs' staff when they had to unwrap sweetbreads...

                            • All other things aside can we at least admit that is some really low quality stuff and we should be trying to feed kids higher quality food? Right now the Federal government is just kicking in $0.23 per meal so at that price it's no wonder they can only get garbage.
