I'd actually agree with you if even half of these piece of **** ads actually provided any useful information about their goods or services. How the **** is Jay Leno in a jetpack telling off Jerry Seinfeld supposed to tell me about the quality of an Acura?
      Unbelievable!

I liked the Matthew Broderick homage to Ferris Bueller for Honda.

I liked the Audi with vampire-killing headlights.

I liked the the Bud Light "Here, Wego" spot to encourage adopting rescue dogs.

The Chevy ad with the Silverado's surviving the apocalypse was funny.

The Chevy ad with the Silverado's surviving the apocalypse was funny.
Yeah, that one was amusing, especially the line about the ford owner.

I liked the Ferris Bueller one also. The morning paper panned it.

The over produced prohibition Bud ad was boring. Ditto for the through the ages ad. They should just stay with the cute and funny ones. Who doesn't laugh at a sheep streaking.

And the dumb dog killed the cat doritos ad made me laugh.
It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I have zero interest in the ads and managed to go another year without seeing any of them.

While it didn't do very well in many of the rankings, I really liked this one.

So many commercials that tell nothing about the product... Ming, did you notice this transition in advertising during your career or education? At what point and what is the basis for advertising changing from demonstrating and pitching the product to making memorable scenes and throwing the product in at the end?

I recall reading that when Alka-Seltzer ran the "Now that's a spicy meatball!" commercial, most surveys found that people had no idea what the ad was for. Many thought it was for a pasta sauce.

I remember the Seinfeld/Leno car commercial vividly... but what brand? I remember the Ferris Bueller one but again, what brand of car was that? They build up these commercials then have about 1.5 seconds at the end where they flash the logo of the car company on a black background or something. This can't possibly be effective marketing but it must be because it gets done. Looks to me like it makes you remember the commercial but not the product.

There's definitely some truth to that, Alby. And if people don't remember the product, it is by definition bad advertising.

That was definitely the problem with the Ferris Bueller spot. But it was entertaining.

Possibly the intention is to provoke discussion of the advertisement? You're actually curious about an ad and discussing it. In that respect, it wasn't a total failure.

The product type can also be problematic. From my understanding, Old Spice commercials are extremely memorable and generate high consumer awareness even to the product, unlike these ads in question, but don't change preferences maybe because product loyalty in the deodorant market is high. I suppose, though, those ads because of their juvenile silliness are attempts to 'aware' new users, such as teenagers (this would also be line with the nature of Axe commercials), it's just not affecting consumer preferences in a tangible manner.

I feel like advertising has become what a mid-20th century historical writer (I can't recall his name but he later became a conspiracy nut) wrote about a theory of institutionalization, where the excesses of the institution become the basis of the morphed institution and change its purpose. Advertising and marketing existed solely to increase sales and the means to that end varied but maintained that goal. Obviously, generating buzz and awareness for your commercial would normally be necessary for this end so advertisers developed ways to enhance awareness of the commercial, to the point where we see advertisements for Super Bowl commercials! It's institutionalization.

I suppose in some ways though it is like those old soap operas, entire shows that existed only to say, "Brought to you by *****". Maybe these commercials are analogous to those soaps. This would still be an example of the institutionalization I mentioned, though.

The thing about institutionalization is that it is always excessive and always a waste of resources.

As with most things, you have no clue what you are talking about.
Your stolen theory of institutionalization is just that... a theory, and a bad one at that.
And if you see marketing/advertising as a waste of resources, then you really are showing how stupid you are.
But that's really no surprise, since you continue to prove your lack of knowledge with just about every post you make.

By the way... how's the girl friend hunt going?
