I think Obama and healthcare is more like "The Old Man and the Lisa" Simpsons episode, where Mr. Burns ends up working with Lisa towards a socially conscious goal, but because of his nature (politician in Obama's case) turns it into a monstrosity (at least from the viewpoint of the goal).

Face the facts--Obama has a lot of flaws. Republicans dislike him for his flaws and for his ideology, not because of his skin color.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Seriously though, Obama is center-left. That is why liberals are pissed at him - because he hasn't governed like the liberal they thought they were voting for.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

By any non-American definition, he'd be center or possibly even center-right.
It is only here where he's even slightly to the left of the political center."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine
"The subject of onanism is inexhaustable." --Sigmund Freud

Left and right at context specific, so it really doesn't matter what Obama would be in Europe or Asia.

The 2004 election was a great example. You had a choice of voting for the party that brought you the Iraq war or you could be a dissenter and vote for the party that merely supported the Iraq war.
