Much of the mark up has to do with the fact that they're technically breaking both state and Federal alcohol distribution laws. Lots of these specialty beer shops mail each beers which aren't legally distributed in other states which they then sell to die hard fans at high mark up. That's also why the hard to find stuff is never on the shelf and instead is kept in the back and they only sell it to regular customers they know are interested in hard to find beers.

Otherwise known as hipster ****s who are willing to break the law and pay outrageous prices just so they can brag about liking a beer before it was popular.

No, most of them just really like beer and want to try one they've read about but can't get locally.

Never paid more than $12 for a 6 pack (or 4 pack) of beer. Plenty to choose from for that price range. Though I love me a good bourbon as well.

          Anyways, I just had a Rogue Hazelnut Brown Ale ( http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/132/1339 ) in a 32oz Growler for $6.99.

I like Rogue but I've never had their hazelnut before. It sounds frigging great.

Indeed it is! Just sad that it is all finished. Alas.

I have a six pack of Leffe for this afternoon. It's pretty good as mass market beers go.

So bourbon can't be used for anything else? How limiting.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Also, I recently had Fuller's London Pride for the first time in a couple of years. Pretty good, but a bit cloying after the first 3 pints.
I find Torpedo to be too bitter for me. Their regular Pale Ale is solid. Their Harvest Ales (Northern and Southern Hemisphere) are great, IMO, but are obviously seasonal.

But that's me. I like hops, but only to a point. Bitterness, beyond a certain point, kills the flavor. A lot of IPAs went off the freaking deep end on the hoppiness. That fad seems to be passing, from what I can tell, which is nice.

p.s. Ooooh, Imran, that does sound tasty. I used to be all about Browns... Newcastle used to be my fav, but then my taste changed and I found lots of browns to be too sweet. But nutbrowns seem to be drier, which works. I'll keep an eye out at the store tomorrow... gracias!

Had a Rogue Dead Guy Ale last night. They make good stuff. Also a local brewer - Wild Heaven's Ode to Mercy which is just great stuff.

Ok, tried the Rogue Hazelnut Brown (drinking it as I type, in fact). Too sweet. It has promise, but it's unbalanced. YMMV.

You REALLY like dry beers then . I thought it was just right and have drunk far sweeter that I liked.

My taste has *really* changed. I used to like beers that I now find sickeningly sweet. So yeah. And yet, I'm not into the hyper IPAs. I find myself trying to hit a sweet spot that's pretty small.

Some of those small seasonal brews vary batch to batch. Also if the beer is bottle conditioned the flavor can change over time.
