We had this discussion not too long ago... I remember talk of the complications of how divorce relates to a polygamist marriage... but I think everyone here except for Ben (and probably Kidicious) has no problem with polygamist marriages as long as the parties involved are all of age and the marriage is consensual.

Since the Bible is OK with polygamy, I don't see why they'd object. How many wives did those Hebrew kings have, after all?

And Jesus clearly is a polygamist, considering all nuns are his brides.

I agree with the Poly consensus that plural marriage between consenting adults should be legal. Lots of complex issues to hammer out with regards to children, inevitable divorce and death, but nothing that's insurmountable. I think that the welfare fraud issue would be less of a problem once these marriages were legally recognized, as the current system regards surplus wives as single mothers. Once they are recognized as surplus wives, then there is a legal category for them that laws can be built to accommodate. (In other words, the illegal nature of the marriages aggravates the fraud.)

All of that is what is going on right now, if they were legally allowed to get married, they wouldn't get as many benefits.

And it was the federal government requiring Utah to outlaw polygamy to become a state, that caused a lot of these problems today.

I think polygamists are idiots, but if they had legal rights to marry, the women would have more resources to get out of these marriages.
