While I can understand the departments need to fund the services they provide, to sit back and watch a house burn when they could have done something about it... that's just wrong.

They should have set up a system where those that pay the fee up front have no additional costs, and those that don't, get charged the full cost of putting out the fire plus a "service" fee that is large enough to make people want to pay up front.

But to be at the scene of a fire and not attempt to put it out... they were indeed sending a message... but not the one they probably wanted to.
They would probably need to charge somewhere between 20 and 50k for the call. Can these mouth-breathers who refuse to pay 75$ a year for fire protection really credibly promise on the spot to pay that much?

Who said anything about making a promise or paying on the spot... BILL THEM FOR IT. And if they don't pay, take them to court. If an ambulance shows up in our town, they bill you for it.
It's that simple. If people don't want to take that risk for fire, they can pay the 75 bucks per year. If not, BILL THEM the cost for the response.

Ming, it can be very difficult to collect from individuals. Difficult and expensive.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Did you read the article? It says they're in a hotel. And if they really couldn't afford to rent a new place to live, there might be a flaw in the "put out the fire, and then bill them" plan.

America is a sad place with sad people.

I can see some people (who lack a moral compass) who would think the fire department did the right thing by sticking to the exact terms of deals. I don't agree, but morals aren't absolute.

But the people who cheer this? Or say "God Bless the people who watched and did nothing"? Those people are beyond pathetic, and very sad individuals. Very unfortunate.

Yes, they're not homeless or dead, they just loss a large chunk of property because they chose to gamble by not paying the fire department and they lost.

Of course it's bull**** that their county government doesn't pay for a fire department with taxes, but if that's what idiots in rural Tennessee want then so be it.

"The mayor said it comes down to simple business. If they don't collect fire fees, the fire department can't survive and if they make exceptions to the rule, no one will ever pay the fee."

so instead of makeing a ****ing 25 bucks fee mandatory we are going to destroy your life. and iam the bad guy

Americans enjoy their illusion of freedom, even when it makes no ****ing sense. Don't bother trying to rationalize it.

You are free to not have basic essentials that the rest of the world takes for granted. God Bless America.
