Or maybe there isn't one big monolithic 'American' culture? Maybe what we call 'American' is a hodge-podge of a multitude of influences of varying significance? Maybe within this nation, there are different cultures, none beneath another in importance, but existing side-by-side from the east coast to the west, from one city block to the next?Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View Post

Precisely none of Laz's list would fit in a Norman Rockwell painting, dear. That was the point.

QFT. I'm actually not familiar with a number of those people, but you don't see me saying "LOL what rap album did John Mytton produce." The ones I am familiar with would, in fact, be quite fun to party with. My main concern would be that Keith Moon might get a little carried away in such company and start smashing the plates.Originally posted by Guynemer View PostYou shouldn't be ashamed of being ignorant; you should be ashamed of being proudly ignorant.

It's fun to imagine a meeting between, say, Dorothy Parker and Norman Rockwell. Did either of them perchance know martial arts?Originally posted by Guynemer View Post

Scratch that, I just read John Mytton's bio. I can envision the guy starting the meeting with a ghastly shriek, then beating Rockwell half to death with a lamp. Rockwell wouldn't even have to say or do anything.
