You're forgetting that contractors do massively superior work than government employees. They also do it faster. And you can fire them if they do it wrong. It's nearly impossible to fire government employees.

Uhmm, yeah. And the average cost of imprisoning a person is more than the national median income. (high 40k compare to mid 40k)

Is that a victory for a system of private contractors... in your mind?

I thought the goal of privatization was for such things to cost less?

Because paying someone less makes someone do their job better?

Not in my experience, except for the firing bit.

I would be more concerned with the likely lack of coverage than the price. (Not necessarily what would have to happen, but it's likely it would.)

                      • If you are so far out in the boonies that it's not economical at any price to provide mail services, maybe you should just ****ing move rather than asking American taxpayers to grant you a windfall in cheap post.

                        • I think everyone in the boondocks should move into the city to get cheap postal services. That would mean there was nobody on the farms so the people in the city wqould starve. To fix this everybody in the cities should move to the boondocks to grow food to avoid starvation. They would then need to move to the cities to get cheap mail services but then they would need to move to move to the boondocks for farming.

If anybody can see the point of this post then please tell me so we can both know.

Human beings tend to want to care for the weakest. While psychopathy can be somewhat beneficial in survival situations, most people find it distasteful in civilized society.

Oh, and it's nice to know psychopathy and intelligence don't always go together.

It's not at any price... it's at a price that would be not a huge headache (for people outside those areas too. imagine if you're stuck billing someone $10/mo for some service and have to pay >$10 to deliver the letter because the contracts were signed when postage was actually feasible). Most of the people who live in those areas are relatively poor already, but they perform a necessary service our society needs to continue. Directly or indirectly most of them are there because of agriculture. They can't just all move to cities, the cities would die.

I've already stated it should be privatized, but to instantly pull the rug out on these people where economic conditions have reached an equilibrium based on what public goods are provided would have many negative drawbacks. More would need to change than simply privatizing USPS to make it work smoothly. As I said previously, I don't know that the positives that would come from it right now are more than the negatives.
