By the way, I was just offered a job at another firm at 10% more than I currently earn. I told them to go **** themselves unless they offered me 25%. How many government workers could go somewhere else and earn more? What does this tell you about the marginal value of a government sector worker?
Very little given that people take government services and by extension government employees for granted.
And I'm sure Imran and Jericho Hill at civ fanatics could go find jobs at IBs pretty easily.

1) cad and usd are essentially equal
2) she's just a regular teacher
3) she's hardly unusual. Teachers with 15+ years of experience get paid ridiculous amounts due to union seniority rules
4) add onto that 2 months summer vacation and very generous pension benefits
No, that's about what I'd expect it to be for equivalent amount of experience here.

The thing that bugs me (and this wont apply to you, obviously) is when some hump making 50k a year complains about teachers making X amount of money and how it's egregious but then never put the pieces of the puzzle together and think, "wow, maybe I should become a teacher if they have all these benefits". This is the case with a lot of professions in public service.

No, what? No, that doesn't seem overpaid relative to the private sector or no, it doesn't seem overpaid relative to your public sector?
I have no idea what you think the labor market looks like for non-technical people. 75k is 25-30% over what you'd expect for somebody with her educational background at peak earnings.

This. And yes, about the same pay gap here too.
And yes, I think it'd be better for everyone* if teachers pay should be based on quality of teaching, not amount of experience.
*except some crap teachers, but even they might improve.

KH, I think gauging what labor prices should be based on educational background is not really a sensible approach. I'll make way more at peak earnings than most high school drop outs (and I currently do make more money than most high school dropouts), but am I not entitled to that even if people are willing to pay me that?

Teachers get burned out so they have to pay for experience or they WILL quit. That said, I think teaching kindergarten wouldn't be too bad for people who like babies. It's more likely teachers will get burned out teaching higher grades and at inner city schools.

I have 3 close friends that are all teachers and they are all new to it. 2 teach high school (one math one science) and the other teaches elementary school. The thing that's hardest for the high school teachers is that so many demands are placed on them by various people that they live in constant fear of not only failing their students as teachers but also being reproached by admins, parents, politicians for things that are ultimately out of their control.
Most teachers, especially young teachers really do want to be good teachers and help kids. The cynicism and money grab isn't something that most people go into the profession with, but is accrued over time.

On the scale of evil, the American financial industry (and everyone who works in it) ranks somewhere between serial child rapist football coaches and Islamic fundamentalists. They've had a more destructive effect on the American economy than Islamic fundamentalists. But that's only because there isn't a strong enough effort being put forth to bring about their destruction.
