    I thoroughly disagree.

        I thought Romney was Zoroastrian.

I think Romney can beat Obama.

Remember, as a dedicated flip-flopper, he's got the magical power to be right about everything, eventually.

He's had a pretty consistent message for the last four to six years. I don't think the waffling will hurt him too much after the primary. The fact that he was governor of Massachusetts will help show independents he's reasonably moderate. It'll be impossible for Obama to claim he's an extremist. There's a lot of very strong Republican VP candidates, and Obama's in the **** right now. I think if Romney's nominated and the economy doesn't improve much, Obama's probably toast.

That Obama is "in the ****" right now and is still beating Romney (as well as all the other contenders) in the head-to-head match ups in most polls belies that notion. That Romney can be perceived as a moderate so easily is exactly why he'll lose against Obama. He needs the die-hard conservatives to embrace him enthusiastically to win, and that's not going to happen. As with McCain, they don't like Romney and will have to hold their nose to vote for him. That doesn't win Republicans elections.

Really, the one of Obama's best gambits would be to put his arm around Romney and praise his MA healthcare law as the model for his own plan at every opportunity.

This is ridiculous. Die-hard conservatives hate Obama and will vote for Romney because there's no other choice. Meanwhile, independents will be flocking to Romney because Obama is a ****ty president presiding over a ****ty economy and Romney is exactly the sort of squishy moderate that appeals to independents.

Obama and his campaign know that Romney is their biggest threat, which is why they're already running ads against him.

He has the Al Gore flaw: he comes across as desperate to become President above all else.

This will be a two Gore election if Romney ends up being the Republican nominee.

I usually laugh at the very concept of this, but...

If Romney is the nominee, what are the odds that a far-right wingnut--take your pick of the also-rans littering the stage yesterday--launches an independant campaign and siphons votes from Mitt?

Not good. What wingnut candidate with the ability to siphon significant votes away from Romney in the general isn't already in the primary, losing to Romney? Palin is the only one I can think of and I'm convinced that she's not running.

I agree the odds aren't good, but I think they're better than average. I'd give it three Perots out of ten (with one Perot being average).

As regards to your earlier point about independents:
