Don't be deliberately obtuse. While the Soviet Union was seen as the enemy, you forget that Britain is a much more socialist country than America. We didn't have quite the same black/white naivety as America over the cold war. While to people in continental Europe the Cold War may have much more immediate impact, as an island nation for us it was largely about the nuclear threat. We had two superpowers who were both frequently unstable and sabre waving threatening each other and the rest of us with annihilation. That is the memory that lasts for many people here.

I don't seem to recall anyone ever saying that the UK had a lot of love for the Soviets. If that truly is what the Brits believe, then I find it sad and disturbing that y'all are so quick to forget the threat of Soviet tanks rolling over war-torn and crippled Western Europe right after World War II.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

I don't think the Brits would be all that sad if the Soviets took over France and just stayed there - I mean, at least it wasn't the damned Germans

Not particularly any love of the soviets, but there is a much stronger socialist element to UK society than US.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostI don't seem to recall anyone ever saying that the UK had a lot of love for the Soviets.
Perhaps we just don't see everything as a real life version of Star Wars. America was a friend to us for the cold war, but you were just as capable of acting like homicidal bullies as the soviets were when it suited your national interests. It's just what countries do.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostIf that truly is what the Brits believe, then I find it sad and disturbing that y'all are so quick to forget the imminent threat of Soviet tanks rolling over war-torn and crippled Western Europe.

They would've cried for us to come beat back the enemy for them, just like they did when the Nazis kicked them out of France.Originally posted by Imran Siddiqui View PostI don't think the Brits would be all that sad if the Soviets took over France and just stayed there - I mean, at least it wasn't the damned Germans

Right, because the Marshall Plan was all about bullying. Do you have any idea exactly how much the United States did to rebuild not only continental Europe, but your little island kingdom as well? And do you not realize how very real the threat of the soviets was following V-E day?Originally posted by kentonio View PostPerhaps we just don't see everything as a real life version of Star Wars. Europe gets to live in its unrealistic bubble thanks to the security generously provided by American hegemony. The UK less so, as they actually have a military worth ****, but still...If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

If America hadn't stood where it did in the Cold War, Europe would have rearmed after WWII considerably quicker and more powerfully than it did. You may want to remember that Europe did a fair bit of ass kicking itself over the last few centuries, and things like the nuclear bomb were not solely American inventions.Originally posted by Tupac Shakur View PostIf only we hadn't had such a black/white naivete about the Soviets. Europe might be a less annoying place today if we'd let the USSR roll all the way to the English Channel...

Of course he doesn't. The only ass kicking Europe did over the last few centuries was tormenting and enslaving backwards, technologically insignificant foreign lands and then in the early 20th century bombing itself into a parking lot twice over. I am not impressed.Originally posted by kentonio View PostIf America hadn't stood where it did in the Cold War, Europe would have rearmed after WWII considerably quicker and more powerfully than it did. You mean when the rest of the world fought a fascist threat while you sat on your asses crying about how it wasn't your problem? Funny, because Hitler was all in favour of striking a dead with the British, yet somehow we managed to decide that some things are worth fighting for.Originally posted by Tupac Shakur View PostThey would've cried for us to come beat back the enemy for them, just like they did when the Nazis kicked them out of France.
You were one of the few countries in the world lucky enough to not face attacks on your mainland. Yes you helped rebuild countries, but you did it for your own national interests.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostRight, because the Marshall Plan was all about bullying. I think you have very little idea of the state of that threat at that time. Immediately following V-E day there was literally zero threat of the Soviets pushing any further west than Germany.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostAnd do you not realize how very real the threat of the soviets was following V-E day?

As the British (and other Europeans) slowly pulled out of their global security responsibilities around the globe, like Turkey, Greece, Vietnam, and the middle east, they left it to Americans to pick up the pieces. Now you guys have the balls to tell us we're warmongers? We patched the world back together from the broken state you guys left it in after you decided to start two senseless slaughters in a row.

Don't be idiotic, you think they'd have simply sat and watched the Russians strengthen without doing anything? Europe was badly drained after WW2, but Russia had also suffered horrific casualties.Originally posted by Tupac Shakur View PostPreposterous.
Wow your complete ignorance of European history goes a long way to proving what I said about Americans earlier. European nations had been fighting each other on a regular basis you ****ing idiot.Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostThe only ass kicking Europe did over the last few centuries was tormenting and enslaving backwards, technologically insignificant foreign lands and then in the early 20th century bombing itself into a parking lot twice over. it is quite incredible how naive you are sometimes HC. You think any country in history has had 'global security responsibilities' that were anything more than looking after their own national interests? Grow up ffs..Originally posted by Hauldren Collider View PostAs the British (and other Europeans) slowly pulled out of their global security responsibilities around the globe, like Turkey, Greece, Vietnam, and the middle east, they left it to Americans to pick up the pieces. Oh yes, I'm overlooking all your pointless dick-size-contest wars your petty monarchs engaged in for sport at the expense of the peasants, like the Crimean War.Originally posted by kentonio View PostWow your complete ignorance of European history goes a long way to proving what I said about Americans earlier. Fun fact: Europeans have been calling US government backwards and barbaric since the time that they still believed in divine right! If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
