More poor people around the world would be able to afford computers and internet connections, and as all such people do once they achieve such status... use them to farm wow gold. Prices would fall like a rock and an entire industry would self-destruct, leaving the newly less poor people as poor as they were before, and the previously less poor gold farmers in ruin too.

A Tobin tax would end the high frequency trading bull**** where firms get an unfair advantage not only over regular investors but even over other institutional investors based on who has their server closest to the Stock Exchange's servers (and thus can make the most trades per second). That will help level the playing field for normal investors and that's a good thing. Plus the tax will make people day trade less and buy & hold more which has to be a good thing for stability.
