obviously they would be able to use the tools of the time to adapt. maybe just something as simple as guerrilla warfare a la the mongols.

I didn't know the Mongols were particularly famous for guerrilla warfare.

I'm pretty sure that within the 2000 or so, enough are bright enough to reconstitute crude gunpowder and other makeshift explosive devices.

I'm not sure, nor am I qualified to comment. It's irrelevant as far as the 5.56 is concerned. The 5.56 is a proven round, and hydrostatic shock doesn't really figure into that.

Honestly, the whole hydrostatic shock theory isn't as important as the imperical evidence of "does it kill things or not?"

If they're really curious they should use it on pigs or cows.

As for makeshift gunpowder: you're thinking too much in terms of civilization. Before they'd put together some makeshift "bombs" they'd be wiped out. Also, the infirmary is probably specialised on gunshot wounds. Now, swords and spears...

I believe the 5.56m was designed to wound and maim more than kill.
REASON- It takes two or more men to care for a wounded soldier and if they live they will not be able to rejoin the battle at a later time.

Are we assuming at least one of the marines knows enough Latin to communicate with these people?

They'll use their Italian from school or their Spanish from home and everyone will just think they're from some weird province. Which wouldn't be too far from the truth either way.

No, the assumption is that spanish speaking persons are close enough to quickly learn it. The priest that you could assume had some latin commits suicide (read the damn links )

I took latin in high school, in case I ever got stranded in the Vatican.

                                The Vatican is Italian-speaking mostly.
