The Marines would if they where prudent be able to easily win the Empire but would never be able to keep it.
This is because they are Americans you see.
Even if their leadership was very clever, they would try to do something stupid like "bring democracy to Rome", make slavery illegal or tried to raise that status of women. All of which would have ended in disaster at that level of technology and the particular political, demographic and social circumstances of the time as well as piss everybody off. In short they would try to import at least some modern values to a time period in which they would simply not work. Not that Europeans would do any better (Saudis, Japanese or Africans might).Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Without resupply, marines would order their men to switch to single shots. Since there is no need for suppressive fire, each marine should be able to take out at least 50 legionnaires before he runs out of ammo. Then you have machine guns, mortars, grenades, etc. Marines would wipe out the first 150,000 or so legionnaires and be able to take over the empire for a while. But eventually, they would run out of modern ammo and be absorbed by the local population and fall in with whoever managed to become the political leadership at that time.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

I'm pretty sure that within the 2000 or so, enough are bright enough to reconstitute crude gunpowder and other makeshift explosive devices.
Are we assuming at least one of the marines knows enough Latin to communicate with these people?

Pretty sure Drake's factually wrong on this. As much as he likes to make fun of the marines, and by extension, Alby, I'm pretty sure they have higher IQ stats than the Army or Navy or Coast Guard. Can't find data on it right now though. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
