  • If there was absolutely no problem with it, why would Paul tell those who were slaves that they were free in the Lord? That if they can become free they should?

Yes, while early Christianity was revolutionary, it was not politically revolutionary.

That does not mean 'NT writers had nor problem with slavery'.

How can the letter of Philemon be supporting slavery? Much less slavery as practiced in the 15th-19th centuries.

    • I think it's less a question of "did this guy's morals adhere to Universal Truth" and is instead a question of "were this guy's morals better than most other people's at the time." So some guy two thousand years ago didn't unambiguously say "slavery is immoral, full stop" - if he said "hey, slave owners, how about not beating the crap out of your slaves, you douchebags" then that's Close Enough.

18th century abolitionists had the moral sense and courage to say slavery is immoral, full stop.

            • Who knows, maybe that was his message, and then the message was filtered through his apostles who had slavery so ingrained into their moral codes from birth that the best they could write down was "hey, if you're going to keep slaves, then don't be a dick about it."

Nah, it's not a "religion is hogwash" argument, it's just a "books aren't inerrant" argument. I don't really care what book's moral tenets somebody is following (except maybe The Book Of Bloody Corpsification or whatever) so long as they read the book with a grain of salt.

And yet the Bible is given as God's word and inerrant by many sects of this religion. Sounds to me that your arguments are one and the same.

What religion? Fundamentalist Christianity? Yeah, I'm not a big fan of fundamentalist Christianity. Fortunately, the fundamentalists seem to be in the minority.
