Everyone wants free healthcare, just like everyone wants a free Star Destroyer. Neither exist.

The moniker "free healthcare" for canadian-style medical care is very revealing about the broken, magical thinking that goes on in the brains of people who think it is a good idea.
      HC is right, of course.

People should be clamoring for cost-effective medical care. The US system is so ridiculously cost-ineffective, any true free market supporter should be examining what the **** went wrong there. The answer is health care isn't a commodity to be bought and sold -- it's an essential service that needs to be available when you need it.

The US system has demonstrated the absolute and utter failure of the thinking that every aspect of life can be governed by the free market. And to be quite frank, anyone who says otherwise (particularly with regards to health care) is very stupid and/or naive.

Nothing is free. All we can ask for is to not be bankrupted because you need to be hospitalized. Freedom is more than just speech and "low" taxes*. Freedom is not having to work the rest of your life to pay off The Man.

      * "low" taxes because the tax burden between the US and Canada is extremely similar. The difference is Americans have to pay for health care on top of their taxes, which tends to bring their net costs above Canadians.

Food is also an essential service that needs to be available when you need it, but it is a commodity that is bought and sold. It is just no longer scarce enough to be a concern to anyone.

I think that there currently is no true market for healthcare at the moment. The way the insurance system works masks any market attributes of the healthcare industry. This is among the things that keep costs high.

HC brings up another good point: neurosurgery is comparable to potatoes.

If you lived in Ireland during the 1840s you might think so.

The point is this: Any sufficiently scarce essential resource is going to be thought of by the public in a similar way healthcare is today.

The point is this: anyone who thinks of health care in the same terms as potatoes is a ******.

I cannot make this any more clear. No matter what you've been brainwashed to think, health care is not a "resource" that can be bought and sold for fair prices.

Again, look at the US health care system and its obscene costs and tell me you think the pricing is fair.

This is silly. The amount of money you need for food is very predictable - you need about the same amount of food every day - while health care needs are very unpredictable. No one would consider "food insurance" unless there was a serious risk of famine in their country. Also, the government does pay for food for poor families, it's called food stamps, so that's not a good example.

If the cost of food was increasing the way the cost of health care is increasing we could no longer leave it to the free market.

Can't wait for HC to lecture us on the temerity of the poor to seek treatment for cancer.

I doubt that will be a problem. I am capable of getting a decently paying full time job with the education I have right now.

Of course, a degree from CMU should roughly double (or more) what I could expect to earn at the moment.

A quote from someone looking at my credentials at the CMU job fair a few weeks ago:
"Wow, I would have expected this resume from a junior or senior. If you were graduating next year I might hire you full time."
