Oh, I remember that. That's where you put two American parts in a Japanese car, and they fit together just fine, but for some baffling reason the car never actually goes anywhere. Right?

This is a complete shock. Dodge makes quality vehicles.

The possible cheap fix which some people have spoken about is to flush the trans fluid using a transmission cleaning fluid (like seafoam tranny cleaner) and replace it with new ATF (ATF4 or better). While you're down there check to see if the pump is working or not or if it appears damaged, if so then see about getting it replaced, also you might want to take a quick look at the linkage just to make sure it isn't loose. If you do all that (and it should only cost a few bucks if you do it yourself) and it still doesn't work then you'll have to take it to a specialist and I doubt you'll get out of there for less then $1000. Some folks claim simply cleaning and flushing the ATF and replacing it with new fluid has worked for them though so you might as well try the cheap option first.

2nd Gen Ram Tech - Help - truck won't go into reverse - MY 1999 DODGE RAM WILL NOT GO INTO REVERSE OR PARK FROM DRIVE. It runs just fine, will shift everywhere but stops at reverse and it feels like something is blocking it. I tried driving and switching gears - would not work. It's not making any new noises, grinding...

Damn, they sure do have a lot of trans problems.

I'd do what Oerdin suggests - cleaning it up. An autmatic gearbox has a kind of 'labrynth' with small balls that open or close paths for the ATF, depending on which gear you select, to actually physically change the gears. Maybe one of them is stuck from grit or something like that.

If the tranny is similar to mine, even flushing is not for the faint of heart. There's no drain you see, you have to crack open the case.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I laughed. But it wasn't an LOL kind of thing. I chuckled to myself. Is there a smiley or acronym for that?

take it to the dealer and find out about the warranty cuz it dont sound good. They do have a way of trying to clean the innyrds under low pressure for ~$80 but I doubt thats the problem, Cowboy's barking up the right tree. Does the engine just rev in reverse? I'd be surprised if the clutch plates are fried so maybe the band that wraps around the assembly broke. They can put a listening device on the transmission to hear busted stuff inside, its mostly just labor so the dealer might give you a break.

oh ya, I avoid dealerships like the plague so if they wont honor the warranty and try to charge full price take it somewhere else for the work.
