Noticed this am when I took my child to school.
Goes into R with nothing happening. Fluid is ok. 2005 Dodge Dakota 52000 miles. Everything else seems to work ok.

I bought a new car recently, opened the hood, and recognized nothing. I used to be able to reassemble piston engines.

Take it to autozone and have them hook up the computer.

              ACK!

You have a transmission issue, rear band or one of the clutches.

Your truck has this for a warranty

                    2005 Dodge Dakota Warranty Program

                    Basic 3 year / 36,000 mile
                    Free Maintenance N/A
                    Drivetrain 7 year / 70,000 miles
                    Roadside 7 year / 70,000 miles
                    Rust 5 year / 100,000 mile

If you are 2nd owner, you only get the 7/70k if you paid to transfer the warranty.

The good news is drive train work is still under warranty.

Depends on when it was bought, Sept 1 2004, out-of-luck.

Warranty expired. I got the dated confused with my other vehicles. It is a 2003.

It's likely going to be expensive but I've been reading a few Dodge forums for you and you're not the first person to have this problem with that transmission. The possible cheap fix which some people have spoken about is to flush the trans fluid using a transmission cleaning fluid (like seafoam tranny cleaner) and replace it with new ATF (ATF4 or better). While you're down there check to see if the pump is working or not or if it appears damaged, if so then see about getting it replaced, also you might want to take a quick look at the linkage just to make sure it isn't loose. If you do all that (and it should only cost a few bucks if you do it yourself) and it still doesn't work then you'll have to take it to a specialist and I doubt you'll get out of there for less then $1000. Some folks claim simply cleaning and flushing the ATF and replacing it with new fluid has worked for them though so you might as well try the cheap option first.

2nd Gen Ram Tech - Help - truck won't go into reverse - MY 1999 DODGE RAM WILL NOT GO INTO REVERSE OR PARK FROM DRIVE. It runs just fine, will shift everywhere but stops at reverse and it feels like something is blocking it. I tried driving and switching gears - would not work. It's not making any new noises, grinding...
