  • Should the Qur'an be Taught in American High Schools?

As the second largest religion in the world and growing and as a religion with important significance to America and its citizens, should Islam's primary religious text be taught to American students? For example, a suicide bomber is running up to you screaming "Praise Allah!" You can respond, "Wait just a minute their fellow. According to verse X line Y of the Qur'an, you're doing it wrong." That and a better understanding of their culture might help alleviate some general hostilities. I don't know.

A little understanding never hurts so I agree.

Is Bible taught in American high schools? If it is, then yes. If it's not, then no or taught together with other holy books as a "history of world religions".

This is exactly what I don't want. Under this logic, schools would have to teach cult books like the Book of Mormon (unless it's by Trey Parker and Matt Stone) opening the gates to all the loons. What's next? Dyanetics? No, the Qur'an has relevance to America. The bible can be taught at home, because it would be too disruptive in a public school setting.

The Bible is only included in studies of western literature along with the Iliad and the Epic of Gilgamesh and is presented in the same way. This is not something that all students will get, only the ones taking western literature/etc.

I think it would be worthwhile to have a class on philosophy and religion in highschool. Currently it is just covered in humanities and literature classes.

Such a course would need to cover Hume, Paul, the Bible, the Quran, and a few other philosophers. I think a course couldn't be reasonable and cover that and eastern philosophy at the same time, so perhaps a second course for that.

Varies by school district/state, but the only time it is taught in Fairfax County is alongside other religious texts in a religion class.

I fully agree. Esp. since the pres - despite killing Obama - is a muslim and/or terrorist anyway.
