PROTIP: A 10,000 ton American CG with PCMS paneling is just as hard to find at night. Ships are only "invisible" when they aren't using active sensors...at night.
Oh come on. You're gonna get on my goat for using "invisible" hyperbolically in a very non-serious discussion? Really, Dilbert?

I must admit that you swedes have taken a new step in ship protection. Instead of protecting the ship with armour, I can see that you instead relies on that any kind of ammo goes straight through - 640 t on a 72 m long ship is a bit low

First of all, we're hardly the only ones doing stealth ships. Our vassals do it too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamina_class_missile_boat

Most ships these days have no armor to speak of anyway. They're tin cans. Although some are harder to hit than others.

True dat, but if you were to hunt pirates outside somalia, would you then pick a Visby or a Absalon/Ivar Huitfeldt class ?

I'd pick the one with the most stowage room. Somali pirates aren't known for their advanced sensor technology.

Yes and no. We have caught a number of pirates, but released them again. The alternative would have been to prosecute and convict them here and after they had served their sentences to release them here too since there were no places to extradite them to.

There are negotiations about procecution in neighbour countries, but I'm not sure how long they have come.

Btw, if you stumble over local news about this new wreckace, I would appreciate it if you pop me a notice - I'm quite interested in the subject It was quite by accident that I found the article in the OP.

Ok, I promise. But if they do decide to salvage it I'm sure they'll bang on the big drum so you might hear of it before me anyway.

I'm pretty sure that they won't try to salvage it, so any news would be local (swedish) or in special papers (and I'm not that interested). Thanks

Lonestar will probably correct me on this, but I'm pretty sure the Ticonderogas have armor. I don't think the Arleigh-Burkes do.

Only for small-arms. Nowadays it's all active-defense and better damage control.

Are they still made of Aluminium ?

IIRC the superstructure of USN ships hasn't been made of aluminium since the Early 80s, ever since the Belknap fire. Could be wrong though(I believe the superstructure on my ship, ate least, was largely steel).

Both classes of the new "LCS"-type vessels use aluminium extensively, since the USN put a premium on speed in the design.
