So how are Americans happy with their new socialist realist Mao statue?

I'll have to go take a look sometime.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I would have voted for the young, smiling MLK.

Hera is way out there in lala land as usual I see. But I must say it's interesting that the statue is a white man with black features, who doesn't look much like good old Luther King as I know him from the pictures.

I was talking about the artistic style, though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Americans don't get this.

Of which of my criticisms was lala land? They where basically aesthetic in nature.

            1. The socialist realist style dosen't really suit the general style of the American capitol
            2. The artist didn't do a good job of representing Kings facial features
            3. The symbolism of his facial expression and posture dosen't match the official societal mythos Americans have about themselves.

I compared to a Genghis Khan conquering warlord statue for a reason. The angry scowl, directed at a memorial dedicated to a founding father, the crossed arms, the aggressive stance. if it was made by an American I would have suspected some subconsicius manifestation of a racist narrative ala "those pesky Negroes got all uppity and beat the **** out of the White man, but don't worry some day we'll fix that."

I don't know about socialist realism, but that is a godawful statue.

DC monuments have gone way downhill. Compare vietnam and lincoln to the pieces of **** that are this and the ww2 monuments

Theres nothing socialist realism about that statue other than he's a political figure captured in statue form.

I agree. **** Hera's nonsense, the statue simply doesn't look good. He's far too angry, which contrasts the message of hope.

It is most definitely socialist realism. And like all socialist realist works it sucks.

The Abe Lincoln statue is not really better, just bigger.

I'm not saying that the statue is great, but to harp on it for MLK looking angry... ****, you don't think he was an angry dude?

This statue is an example how cutting corners to save money results in crap. Sure, I'm sure outsourcing it to China saved a ton of money but the result is just a really bad statue and it is all because we lack the collective civic pride to actually do things well in the public domain.

The abe lincoln statue is smaller. And it is much better.

Note the worry on his face, the tension in his hands, one foot jutting forward. He has the responsibility for the survival of his nation in his hands, yet he remains seated, and looks frail. It's a wonderful contrast.

I like the world war II memorial, but the new MLK one just sucks. I'm not actually a huge fan of the vietnam memorial.
