That's not how a republic transitions into empire. The first imperator of the American Empire will be a charismatic general, perhaps someone like David Petraeus, who uses a discontented military (soldiers who have had their benefits and pay reduced during some budget crises) and populism to back a power grab and name himself president for life using emergency powers. Obama and his predecessors are optimates, the Republican/Democratic traditionalists who want to keep the status quo of the oligarchy but fail to curb the excesses and corruption of the American Republic.
