I have not personally tried PUAs, I just think Al needs help. A book, meetings... something. That wiki article is gives both sides of opinion on the issue and it also gives a few pieces of valuable information for Al.
I imagine that Al has a lot of anxiety, mental and sexual frustration built up from his lack of success. What you and I may feel is natural he may have to study to perfect. By the way, I am not always successful and I also feel anxiety when I approach women. For me, this anxiety disappears when I feel things are going well. I often, want to kick myself when things don't go well or I say something stupid happens a lot), but what usually gets me most of the way with the woman is that I had the nerve to approach them in the first place.

Al, I have normally had jobs that had some manly status attached to them so maybe women have seen that as a plus. However, When I was the Assistant Manager at a chicken restaurant, women still approached me. I am also slightly overweight right now, I'm going bald now and women still approach me. I try not psyche myself out. I try to psyche myself up. I look at my positives and try to go out and get what I want. I also measure my success not by what I did not get but by what I did get. If you focus on your failures or compare yourself to the next person you will never succeed. Also, when women ask you what you do, tell them you are preparing to be a Marine Officer or just Marine. Tell yourself this also. This is not a lie.
And if you are to be a Marine then you have to think like one. No hill is untakeable.
