On a hard run or other outdoor exercise, and I mean where I really have pushed myself, I get a bottle of powerade or gatorade. I can get the regular variety with all its sugar or the zero calorie variety which has no sugar but has some artificial sweetener. I don't want the sugar but I don't trust the artificial sweetener. Hmm...
Mix your own? Water + whatever salts you need? I'm sure there must be tons of recipes around the 'net.

Not everyone is trying and failing to get into the marines, Alby. Some of us are okay with not having a lot of muscle on our bodies so that we can get cruised in the shower.

Cruised in the shower? What does that mean?

And you don't need muscle just for military applications. Is it not useful to be able to pick up heavy things from time to time? Is it not useful to be able to sprint to catch a train? There's plenty of reasons why it's good to be in good physical shape.

Now that Albi's satisfied his compulsive need for attention let's discuss the attack of diet soda.

Water the bottle down, but go with the sugar. It's like ORT, your body needs the sugar to help absorb the salt. And if you're being active then the sugar is going to be used by your body.

A second study by some of the same researchers carried out on mice linked the artificial sweetener aspartame to the kind of pancreas damage that occurs early in diabetes.

As you know, if you are exercising some sugar is needed even.

My brother, when he does something intense, would take a concoction of green-tea, honey, and rice... which was so intense he thought he was 'wasting it' if he wasn't moving when he was eating it.

Drink the gatorade with sugar (maybe dilute it a bit). If you are working out hard, the sugar will be burnt right away which is what you need at that time anyways.

Fatties drink diet so diet must make you fat!

The heart of the claim is that people who drank diet supposedly got 70% fatter then people who didn't drink diet. It only makes sense to me that the folks who drink diet are worried about their weight problem and that is why they're drinking diet, not the other way around. I'd file this under bad science unless it's backed up by something more.

Yeah, I am also inclined to think that those who drink diet are:
                          1. Those who are concerned.
                          2. Those who don't have the willpower to completely stop drinking pop. Those who are more likely to compromise.

Still... I would rather have healthy (Small) amounts of sugar.

Oerdin: Did you just read the headline?!

JM: They specifically included people switching from diet to regular drinks in this.

It's really interesting bit of food science this, where 'fake' fat and sugar can make the body demand the calories if it doesn't then get them. And this isn't the only bit of research in this area.

I read the whole thing. That is why I expressed my concern about drinking the diet pop (and that I should have just drank a regular one).

But I do think my example would be a systematic, and I don't see that they included it.

And Oerdin is saying that he disagrees with the study's finding (the title of the headline).
