He disagrees, but his reasons for disagreeing don't address the substance of the research.

It was an x post I hadn't seen yours when I was writing mine. They looked at change in weight, not starting weight.

A previous study by the same team with some more detail.

      http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20050...in-more-weight

The follow up research has been to try and find why there was a link. ie. is it just people who get fat are more likely to drink diet drinks or is there a cause, and now they seem to have worked out the mechanism.

My concern has nothing to do with starting weight.

It has to do with how much 'will power' someone has.

        Take 2 groups of people.

One has enough willpower to say 'no more pop'. The other says 'well, I don't really want to do without pop, I will drink diet'.

Which group do you think will be more likely to say 'I don't really need that desert, even though it is free'.

And the research seems to be saying is that whatever the motivations, having the sweet taste without the sugar will make you think "I need that dessert".

But good that they are continuing to do more research.

I believe it from personal experience. Not that that means anything.

Nobody's disputing that. What I don't get is what the **** that has to do with whether or not you consume virtually no simple sugars. It's possible to exercise enough to burn enough calories for even large amounts of simple sugars to have virtually no significant negative impact on your health. You're nothing other than paranoid.

P.S. Milk contains a great deal of simple sugars.

Don't tell him why lactose rhymes with fructose, glucose, and sucrose. We want him to figure that out on his own.

OMG! A cup of milk has the same glycemic load as a cup of orange juice!

I guess with all those milk sugars he really has to watch out for what the Gatorade will do to him.

                          1. You can hire people to move those heavy things. If you get cavities from non-diet soda, hire a dentist; if you need a grand piano moved into the solarium, hire movers.
                          2. Show up on time and you don't have that problem and/or fire the driver for incompetence if he makes you late.
