it would be nice that something comes up which would start to sink his empire in the US... now that would really hurt... even though I doubt it will happen.

So it seems this morning that Boris and Dave have double teamed the met commissioner to force him to resign, for doing exactly what Cameron did by employing Coulson. The hypocritical wankers.

Guess this means they both think Dave must resign.

Its funny to watch Murdoch being chased by gutter press paparazzi.

              This is great:

it's a bit more complicated than that mike! although it's true that they were close politically.

i thought you were talking about the 24/7 news culture, politicians scared stiff of making a decision because what might appear in the papers the next day, the spin, the crawling to curry favour with murdoch and his ilk. that's what i was referring to, and yes, i think it really started under blair. of course it's continued ever since, under both parties. hopefully this episode will change things.

It was maybe seemed worse under Blair because Thatcher and to some extent Major naturally agreed with Murdoch's politics, whilst labour historically had totally disagreed.

                    But Blair was pretty bad.

Cameron's lot amazingly are much worse. Imagine managing to have a press advisor worse than Alistair Campbell!

well i mentioned major more especially because his way of dealing with the press was largely to ignore them. he was the only prime minister for a long time who didn't give any honours (peerages etc.) to members of the press. he wasn't the kind to socialise with media moguls.

it certainly raises questions about cameron's judgement, especially as he was warned about coulson before he took him on.

There seems to be a widespread belief amongst PMs since Major that Murdoch killed off his Premiership, which probably made the situation worse.

And people believe that you need Murdoch support to win an election... he has supported the winner every time but whether it's causal the evidence is in doubt.

What's more important is that the politicians believed it was causal.

yes i would agree with that. i think that the newspaper believe that they exert a lot of influence of the electorate (1992 - it was the sun wot won it - well they would say that wouldn't they!) and the politicians believe them. i don't think there's much of a casual relationship, it's more a case of murdoch seeing which way the wind is blowing and backing the a party based on that. of course, one would expect the media to say that they're important. the fault is with the politicians who believe them and play the game.

more generally, it'll be interesting to see who comes out of this well. the tories, and cameron especially, will obviously take a hit, the only question is how big and how long term. ed miliband is looking quite good right now, but i'm not sure that in the long term people will forget that labour were playing the exact same game up until the scandal broke. the liberals are the only ones who have their hands clean here, so it should benefit them, because they'll be justified in saying that they weren't playing the game while the others were up to their necks in it.

yates (assistant met commissioner) has gone now. not really a surprise, couldn't really see him hanging on after the commissioner himself resigned.
