Free for anyone who doesn't pay for prescriptions at least, but I think this might mean that it doesn't do what they want it to...

i have to declare an interest because i was exempt from prescription charges when i was living in the UK.

i remember when i used to visit the doctors i got the impression that some people didn't need to be there. i often chatted to some of the old dears and a few more or less said to me that they were mostly there for the company, someone to talk to (and while loneliness in old age is an issue, i don't think this is way to solve it). i know it's anecdotal, but i can well believe it wasn't just happening at the kingsway surgery in swansea. plus we all know a few hypercondriacs who run to the doctor at the first sign of a cold.

i think it could be a sensible reform if implemented properly. the devil is in the detail though of course.

Yeah, I think the Old Dears wanting a chat is the main problem, but of course charging pensioners who are often amongst the poorest and most at risk is potentially very dangerous, but if you exempt them (as with prescription charges) you don't alleviate the issue.

true enough. perhaps you could make wealthier pensioners pay the fee and exempt the poorer ones (and those with chronic conditions). or perhaps have a limit on the number of free visits within a given time.

Probably when you get to that level of admin, cheaper not to bother charging.

that may be an issue. although i don't think a limit would require too much admin (as they keep records of visits anyway). i would be interested to hear some details of how they do it in europe, especially wrt to pensioners.

Do not tilt your head back when you have a nosebleed. Do the exact opposite.

Lean your head forward and pinch your nostrils shut (hard) just below the end of the nasal bone. Hold that position for 15 minutes. If it still bleeds, see a doctor.

Note: that is general nosebleed advice. If it has already been bleeding for a day, time to see the doctor regardless.

                          Thanks, Guy.

It seems to have stopped. I'll go to the clinic tonight if there is more blood coming.

That'll stop the bleeding, for sure. As well as his breath.

We don't pay for prescriptions either here in Wales, so clearly Wales is far more civilised than England.

I, of course, am against free prescriptions and would even consider instigating a nominal fee for GP visits.
