Let me reiterate so it's clear. From my experience, men don't usually care much about eye color although a lot of women wear hazel-colored contacts. Like you said, that probably has more to do with women than attracting men.
However, most women, particularly those that prefer lighter complexions, prefer light eyes over dark brown eyes. Light eyes get a lot of attention. I've heard too many women mention a man's light eyes way too much. No one ever says anything about a man's dark eyes; maybe because it's a norm and the differences are what is noted. I just asked my girlfriend. She stated that only one of her black female friends has ever mentioned eye color in any sort of preference and that eye color preference was light brown. She stated that she herself likes low to no hair on a guys head more than anything else.
