The worst things about Picard weren't his decisions, though. That the Federation would keep giving him new commands after getting his ships destroyed was dubious judgment. That they would return him to command after being assimilated by the Borg? Absolutely insane.

Picard was credit to team. Also, his ships got destroyed because he was in impossible situations where they're sending a diplomat armed with an m-16 to negotiate with people in tanks who weren't there to negotiate.

But the thing is, Kirk violated the PD several times without repercussion. So apparently the precedent had already been set that when in situations where a captain is faced with impending atrocities, breaking the PD was tolerated. That just makes Picard's weak-kneed refusal to break it to save innocent lives all the more appalling.

Look, Picard was and still is working for the Borg since his assimilation. That's why he didn't destroy them all in the episode "I,Borg" when he had the chance; and that's why he tries to kill as many innocents as possible while maintaining his cover as Captain. However, there is a power struggle between him and the Borg queen, hence all the hullabaloo in "First Contact."

You all are a bunch of morons. The Federation is the best thing to ever happen to the galaxy, because its goal is to usher in a post-scarcity civilization. And we know from several episodes that in the future, the Federation still exists and is more powerful than ever. And we also know that in the future, time travel is extremely common. The obvious conclusion is that the Prime Directive (and Temporal Directive, of course) is an invention of the future Federation meant to ensure that the Federation still exists and is still a beacon of civilization. When self-righteous captains violate the Prime Directive because of their own pathetic and inconsistent set of morals, they are endangering the future of all free life in the galaxy and probably forcing the future Federation to manipulate history.
