Every character has a anachronistic hobby that just...doesn't...make...any...sense.

Yeah. Picard had a thing for archeology and old cultures etc. which somehow felt right for the character though. But lotsa other hobbies were stupid, like Tom Paris' obsession for late 20th century **** - just some rather "constructed" way to get today's stuff into a 23rd century show.
