  • Time to replace the carpet.

So my old carpet has about had it and I've got a few options on what to replace it with. I could go with some ok but not great nylon carpet which would be cheapest, I could go with some real honest to goodness hard wood floors (which is expensive and scratches but looks great), I could go with mid grade laminate flaux hard wood floors (which is actually pretty cost effective and long lasting but looks like crap), or I could go for a nice wool carpet like Berber. My girlfriend likes the Berber while I like the real wood flooring. She worries that the hard wood floors will scratch necessitating costly refinishing plus she says she doesn't want her feet to get cold (Me: "Put on socks") while I worry that real wool carpet will be a nightmare to clean especially after I talk her into letting me have a dog.

What say you oh sages of Apolyton? Any advice on home flooring or should I just rip it all out and and live caveman style on the bare concrete floors? I'm also interested in putting marble tile in the kitchen and bathrooms instead of the old linoleum but I need to see how much of my savings she can spend on flooring before I start the next project.

The carpet could still last a few more years as it was new when I bought the place in 2004 but honestly it was a rather lack luster mid grade carpet the old owner put in just before I bought the place to help pretty the house up for sale. Seven years seems a good life span for carpet so I don't mind spending a bit of coin to get something nice.

If you're thinking dog. Think wood. While I'm not a big laminate fan, the cost difference is so large. But again, if you're thinking dog, go real so it's easier to repair any scratches.

Oerdin, I think you're missing the poll option, "Could I possibly have made a more boring thread?" If you'd like, I can add that for you.

            Polish the concrete.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I didn't say worse, but more boring.

I didn't know there was a rule against threads on home improvement projects.

This is the Off-Topic; there are no rules. And because there are no rules, I'm perfectly within my rights to ***** about how boring a thread this is, and everyone else is perfectly within their rights to tell me to stfu and not post in threads I think are boring.

Go with the wood, put some varnish on it so it's not scratched so easily. Take off your shoes when inside, like Japanese and Russians do, and it'll serve you for two dozen years. If you put a thin layer of cork underneath it will stay warm.
