If theres a significant enough amount of people so against abortion, why hasn't someone done it by now?Originally posted by Elok View PostHC, calm down, you're doing yourself no favors here. Ken, I meant that they are human shields in terms of federal funding. We can't defund abortion without defunding reasonable reproductive services as well. If there were a pro-life equivalent PP would be dead in the water; it'd suck away funding at lightning speed, leaving the country's most important abortion provider SOL.
But no, the pro-life movement has to be largely run by zealots, which is why it's gained little traction for the past forty years.

If you're referring to making abortion illegal, that's impossible. SCOTUS has been sitting on the argument for decades. In the process they've mobilized the pro-life base while not preventing us from passing a barrage of onerous regulations to make life hell for abortion providers in unsympathetic states. I guess our side isn't the only one that needs a dose of sense.Originally posted by kentonio View PostOh and as for that, if you don't think its moral then get the law changed. Morality is subjective.

 1. The Supreme Court takes a looong time to change membersOriginally posted by kentonio View PostIf theres a significant enough amount of people so against abortion, why hasn't someone done it by now?
 2. The fact that so many of them are also opposed to contraception
 3. Idiot stunts like terrorism that drive away sympathizers
 4. The movement being symbiotically attached to the Christian Right makes it easily branded as a violation of religious freedom.

 Among other things.

As a policy issue, my personal opinion is that we should a) make traveling to other states to get abortions illegal and then b) allow states to decide whether to make abortions legal, simply because it is a contentious moral issue. But personally I'd be delighted to see it banned everywhere. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

 A) would be a PITA to enforce, if not impossible.

There is that pesky Constitution to deal with. The Priviledges and Immunities Clause to be more specific. You can't tell someone that they can't do the same thing in their state that state citizens can (unless it is an activity that is location specific - like voting). It'd be like denying someone from a dry county to drink in a wet county because they aren't from there.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Yes you can. Gun licenses work like that, for instance. It's also illegal to take a minor across state lines in order to evade age of consent laws. Both are similar to this.Originally posted by Imran Siddiqui View PostThere is that pesky Constitution to deal with. The Priviledges and Immunities Clause to be more specific.
