Why is it so hard to be a part-time bank teller (or to get any job)?

Not only that but my mother spent over a decade working for Wachovia Securities, as well.

      She's a *****, though, and I don't want to speak to her.

You know... my mother's boss was a Temple alum. His name with a plaque was on the wall of the business school. Go figure.

Connections aren't something you are entitled to. You have to go out and pursue and nurture them yourself.

                  Jobs are a good start.

I took advantage of my school's internship program, which easily got me into IBM. It was easy from then on. Now I've got friends working for Google, MS, Apple, all of the big investment banks, and tons of random smaller companies across North America. That gives me access to positions that are not necessarily advertised for publicly, and I get a foot in the door with recommendations.

                  Job-hop and be charming.

I can not divine any such purpose in this work: a working life preoccupied with the narrow margins of hollow metrics symptomatic of a culture of instant gratification and supporting a corporate dogma of service consisting of formulaic, shallow greetings and forced smiles to eke out every conceivable penny in exchange for deleterious, obesity-inducing food. Presented with endless directives demanding marginally incremental improvements in service times, my frank reaction is to roll my eyes and think "Who gives a ****?".

That is not service. Service is a sacrifice for the betterment of your fellow man. Service is what a doctor provides. Service is what a firefighter provides. Service is what a teacher provides. Service is what a soldier provides. Service is not what a burger flipper or a glorified manager/director/executive who directs burger flippers provides.

A 'mission to provide customers with the best burgers' may motivate CEO Rick Silva but it leaves me empty. It is not my conceived vision of my post-baccalaureate life or the expectations I had when I first stood on the yellow footprints at MCB Quantico.

50 hours per week making and selling hamburgers is 50 hours too many.

Thank you for the opportunity and I apologize for the inconvenience my resignation will cause.

                      • While working you establish good relationships with your boss and coworkers. You can also network with people who are working in areas that you are interested in. You may also want to look at contacting alumni from your school.

                        • A big thing is, as KH pointed out, that no one's going to want to help you get a job that you're going to leave in a month's time. You should have just kept this fastfood job until the marine thing came about, been miserable, and built some character and appreciation for hard, unpleasant work.

You have me on ignore but you should know full well about my mother. I posted enough about her back in the day. I don't speak to her.

I didn't know at the time what she did. She was either a broker, an advisor, or an account manager of some sort. She started in a securities firm which several takeovers later became Wachovia Securities. It's now defunct. I actually did give her a call once to ask if she knew anybody but she said she couldn't help me.

Not speaking to your own mother is apparently more important than landing a job you want.
