    • Probably going to sign the papers and pay a deposit on Saturday. I negotiated today and feel I did very, very well. I got two builders quasi-bidding against eachother for my business even though I was only seriously considering one of them. Saved me tens of thousands.

We've basically finalized the floorplan and pricing. I'm really pumped for it. We customized a ****load. It's a walkout basement lot on a hill, with a great view (as it is higher than the houses behind it).

We're knocking down some walls to make a huge bonus room/media room upstairs. We're adding a fireplace (gas) to that room also. Wiring it for 7.1 surround as well. The whole house is getting the cat6 & fibre treatment.

Granite counters in all the bathrooms & the kitchen. The kitchen has been extended (8 by 4 foot island...).

The great room (off the kitchen) has a stone fireplace.

The ensuite is just massive. 5-piece, tons and tons of space and a two-person tub with a large shower (with seat!).

Basically all of the upgrades offered (knockdown ceilings, 9 foot ceilings, upgraded hardwood & carpet, expanded garage, upgraded insulation (garage + attic too), enlarged windows, expanded nook, and a wetbar installed (with plumbing) off the bonus room. We are using the two extra bedrooms as a PC room (two PCs for gaming), and the other as a guest bedroom.

Very excited. They can't build it soon enough.

Alby would be very irate about the whole thing.

Plan B is developing the basement down the road (though we are getting the basement stairs developed as the house is built, it's cheaper), which will house a wine cellar, home theatre, and storage space. Oh, and it's a walkout basement so we'll probably put another room in there just as an exercise room/gym. This is probably a couple of years down the road.

It's pretty much what you would expect from a couple of gay professionals building a house.

          • We've killed Bedroom #2 in favour of a large bonus room. We've pushed the 2nd floor bathroom towards the other bathrooms and are installing the wetbar where the bathroom originally was.

            • These are pictures of the showhome, which is pretty close to how we'll finish it (aside from the customizations I've mentioned).

I'm guessing you mean the bathroom was pushed towards the two bedrooms, right?

I'm not sure how I feel about the master toilet looking directly at the shower...

But it's a great plan for a narrow-ish lot, definitely. Good that you have room where you guys can flex.

Very nice, but the kitchen is waaaay too white. I wouldn't do white cabinets like that, personally, unless it was balanced by dark countertops. Even then, it just seems a little washed out with all that white-on-white.

Yeah, it's a bit weird but I can live with it. We've actually also picked a pocketdoor so the shower/toilet room can be more private. By default it didn't have one...

Yeah, this is the problem right now with all of the lots in Calgary. In all of the new neighbourhoods they've got long, narrow lots (the lot we picked is 38 feet wide).

Yes, we're not going to go for THAAAT white. I'm white enough as it is.

9'1" on the main floor. Not sure about the top floor. Maybe 8?

                          • The basement also has 8 foot ceilings (an upgrade). It's basically mandatory though for a walkout. When it's finished it'll be seamlessly part of the house.

Pittsburgh is way out there. The distance from Philly to Pittsburgh is over 300 miles; for comparison, the distance from DC to NYC is ~220 miles.

Pittsburgh doesn't have much in common with the Eastern seaboard.
