Did you ever take a person less seriously because of their accent?

Actually, i understand what you mean. When i went into the army I use to get made fun of because of my Texas accent. Took me awhile to lose it. Now people tell me I don't sound like i am from Texas when they ask where I call home.

New York can still be quasi-respectable. Maybe it's because I knew so many smart investment bankers with the accent.

But New Jersey and Philly? No way.
