Not at all but when the crimes are "morality" crimes there isn't an overwhelming consensus it should even be enforced (unlike say, murder) much less punished harshly. Rather than lessen the dangers of a "seedy" trade the government proposes legislation to increase the danger. It's ideologically driven and just not smart.

Anyway, to the other issue. I couldn't find an article from the time of the decision (it;s past late for me now) but there was a recent article about the upcoming appeal.

OK. So the law will get sorted out. He isn't tearing up the Charter. He's saying he thinks (and many agree with him) that pimps deserve more serious jail time.

They really do make no sense. Bouchard claimed they were to transition QC out of Confederation and here they are 20+ years later drawing pensions from the government of Canada. I actually agree with you re harm reduction. I've heard that girls become more isolated due to having to not live with family or friends who could get charged.

I don't agree though that we do not need stiff penalties for people who groom young people and turn them out to be earners.

They make the person completely dependent (they isolate them) and then turn them out. The pros eventually get away from the predators, but they are now in the life and do it on their own volition.

Yes but they would be chasing more of a niche market (ie anything still deemed illegal - underage, coerced, etc) as the mainstream market will be more accessible. We're going to go after those creeps anyway but there will a smaller market for the pimps to work in.

It's important to note Justice Himmel didn't strike down the laws because they violated the pimps rights, it was because they violated the women's rights.

Also, Justice Himmel is female (Susan iirc).

There would be no problem with a coalition that did not depend on seperatists and special interest parties to govern.
